BlackBerry Bridge and AT&T

by

For BlackBerry users who also happen to have the PlayBook, we get a great method of connectivity. By downloading the BlackBerry Bridge application we get access to a lot of our phones features over bluetooth on our tablets. You can check your email, or BBM easily on your tablet wherever you go. For everyone besides AT&T, you also get access to data for all your other apps on your PlayBook with only a few exceptions. (Kobos, Video Chat, App World) So even away from a WiFi connection you can use your tablet to surf the web, or even share with Facebook and Twitter.

AT&T took plenty of time deciding how they were going to cripple this awesome feature. When they finally approved BlackBerry Bridge, they labeled it as tethering. Tethering on AT&T cost either $45 if you are on the now grandfathered 4GB+tethering plan, or $50 for the 5GB+tethering plan. In my opinion, as well as many others, if you’re paying the per GB rate then you should be able to use it how you please. Luckily the BlackBerry can install apps from the web browser. Thanks to good samaritans you can find the latest version of BlackBerry Bridge (as well as many other Research in Motion produced apps) via the browser. The website I would recommend is http://rroyy.com/ota/

The BlackBerry PlayBook has been updated to 2.0. This brings with it an awesome socially connected email, calendar and contacts. Bride was also updated, bringing with it a heavily requested feature: BlackBerry Remote. This allows you to use you BlackBerry as mouse and keyboard for your PlayBook. (A few astute users found that it can be used with plenty of other bluetooth enabled devices since it uses a standard protocol.) The most used example is to have your PlayBook hooked up to your TV via HDMI and control all functions of your PlayBook on the couch. Another cool feature is the ability to open plenty of attachments, photos, or websites on your PlayBook by selecting “Send to PlayBook” on your phone. I also found that they’ve added a Powerpoint remote to the phone for all your presenting use cases.

When the iPad first burst onto the scene, it was hard to justify the need for an “in between” device for some. It definitely is interesting to see phones and tablets playing a more connected role. Expect to see more of this from BlackBerry moving forward, and don’t be surprised to see similar things from the big competitors.

WolfPack Super Bowl Giveaway!!

So we have the exciting Super Bowl happening this weekend and we thought we would do a giveaway to the One person who picks not just the winning team, but is also nearest to the ending score of both teams. So having the winning team is not enough. For example if you pick the Giants winning 35-21 over the Patriots and the final score of the game is the Giants winning 21-14 over the Patriots, then you have a point difference of 21 points. So first off to be in contention to win the giveaway you have to first pick the winning team. Then the person with the least point differential between their guess and the final score wins the giveaway. In the event of a tie, those participants will pick a number between zero and the total points of the game. The example above would be to pick between zero and 35. Then we will use a randomizer to pick a number and the person who is closest to that number will be declared the winner. Rules are: One guess per person only,  Admins of other Facebook pages and our Facebook page are Not eligible to participate. Post your guess as a Comment at our Facebook Page  for  this Post only!  Do not post your guess on our website, do not post your guess on Twitter, or do not start a new Post on our Facebook Page as it will not be eligible. Again only guesses as Comments to the Post made by the AT&T Fan Page on our Facebook Page are eligible!!  Guesses can be made Till 12PM Central time on February 5 2012. So what is the prize? A Super Nice Laptop Backpack from the recent AT&T Developers Summit!! Good Luck!!

To Lifeproof or not to LifeProof….That is the question…???

by

Screen Shot 2012-02-03 at 11.53.44 PM

Spend a few days at CES, and you will quickly see how big the cell phone case market has become. There were literally dozens of case manufacturers at CES showcasing their latest. One company in particular seemed to stand out from the rest. I had only recently heard of their product, so I was happy to see they had a booth at CES. I walked up to the booth and met with Dan Koziol VP of sales and Marketing for LifeProof.

Lifeproof had a 4 tier glass case setup at their booth to simulate the 4 elements their case protects the phone  from.  Water Proof | Dirt Proof | Snow Proof | Shock Proof.   The bottom tier of the case was full of water, simulating the case being water proof and the other 3 tiers were desert sand and simulated snow. They had a mechanism setup that was constantly dropping the phone and reeling it back in again, which went on constantly, shock proof.

Now, getting to the case itself. There are a few things I noticed right off the bat that were interesting to me. The case itself is made out of hard and rubberized plastic. The back is full plastic, this thing is thinner than an Otterbox Defender, and I feel it’s stronger. The charging port is a flip down, plastic door and the head phone port has a threaded plug that allows you to slave in a waterproof headphone jack lanyard, which comes with the case.

Something I noticed right out of the box was, only the factory Apple 30 pin connector fits the case to charge the phone. This may be a downfall for some. I, in fact have a factory Apple charging cord that an old Apple Bluetooth headset plugs into, and this would not fit. The only other Apple 30 pin that I have, I keep at work. So the case needs to come completely off for me, every time I need to plug the phone in. Now the waterproof ports, from what I understand, are one way check valves. Air can be pushed out, but nothing can go back into the case.  It’s pretty interesting how that works. One thing I noticed about these ports, which are in all of the places where volume either comes in, or goes out of the phone. So the speaker mic ports at the bottom of the phone, have the check valves, as does the ear speaker.

Making a phone call, you can tell, has a little muffle to it. It’s not that big of a deal, but it sounds like someone is talking with their hand in front of their mouth. I also noticed something very interesting while playing music. Sitting the case down flat on the table, muffles the music. When you pick up the phone and put your hand on the back of the phone, you can feel the music resonating through the back, and pressing on the back of the phone case changes the music tone. To me, it doesn’t sound like anything is coming out of the speaker check valves at the bottom of the phone.

I will say, this is a very solid case and I see myself saving it, more or less for a time that I would really need it. If you love how responsive the iPhones capacative touch screen is, it  will take you some getting used to with the LifeProof case on as you need to push a little harder when texting. The front of the screen is shiny plastic, so you get the same finger prints you get on the phone screen. It collects oil the same way the phone would naked. I have a little biased opinion of full cover cases like this, because I love my phone with just a bumper on it. I like to be able to feel the screen taps and the fact that with the bumper, it won’t slide across the table like it would with the Lifeproof case. The case being hard plastic on the back, if it starts to slide on a surface, it will just keep going. The vibrate switch also takes on a mind of its own, and for some reason, in the case functionality is reversed. Up is mute and down is ringer, strange. The home button on the case is a little raised and Ive also activated Siri a few times climbing out of my car with my phone in my pocket.

For the category this case it in, I feel it’s the best case out there right now, because there simply isn’t a case that can do everything this case sets out to do. If you are comparing it to the Otterbox Defender, it’s quite a bit thinner, and like I said earlier, I think it’s stronger.  Its also waterproof up to 3 meters or 9 feet, which no other case claims. So if you are so connected to your iPhone so much that you need to take it in the shower with you, this is the case for you.

Lifeproof also manufactures and sells an Arm Band, a Bike handle bar mount, a belt clip and a mount that you can snap to your bike helmet for video. All of the accessories come at an extra cost. With the phone, you get the case and the waterproof headphone lanyard. Retail price is $79 and the case can currently be found on the shelf at your local Best Buy Retail Store, in 4 Colors. White, Black, Pink and Purple.

If you have any questions that you need answered or you feel I didn’t cover, feel free to email me and I will try to answer it in the best way possible.

Enjoy.

No Mobile HotSpot Option On Your iPhone? Try This!!!

by

photo 1

Recently some friends that switched to AT&T’s wonderful Data Pro plan of 5GB with tethering for $50 had some difficulties. When they went to Settings>General>Network, the “Set Up Personal Hotspot” option was not available.

So when I went looking for fixes I found these options below.

You can try the following first:

  1. Open Settings>General

  2. Scroll to the bottom and select Reset Network Settings and confirm.

Once your iPhone restarts, the Personal Hotspot should reappear in the Settings main page. If it still is not there, try changing the name of your iPhone:

  1. Open Settings >General>About >Name

  2. Choose a name with no spaces or other characters.

  3. Reset your iPhone by holding the Sleep/Wake and the Home buttons until the Apple logo appears, then let go.

The Personal Hotspot setting may have been set to off during the iOS 5 update. If that was the case:

  1. Open Settings > General > Network

  2. Activate Personal Hotspot.

So after this we had some people that still did not have the “Set Up Personal Hotspot” option available. Well after some research I have found the potential culprit! An app called Onavo that compresses data used by your apps and saves the user on their data plan.

The problem is that it removes the “Set Up Personal Hotspot” option.  However, deleting the Onavo app isn’t enough. You have to remove the Onavo profile as well. Go to Settings>General>Profiles>Onavo>Remove Profile. This has helped return the “Set Up Personal Hotspot” option for many. I have contacted the app developer to advise them of this as well. Hope this helps!

Audi A3 Simulator CES Experience

by

Last week has been a total blur! CES has been amazing and I cant thank AT&T enough for accomodating us all week. In this video we have the Audi rep showing me the ropes using the new Audi A3 trainer. This trainer allows Audi to show off the features of the car without actually needing an entire car as a demo. This also allows anyone to get in and out of the trainer easily.

The training started off with an explanation of the forward controls. Audi blew me away in this department. The navigation screen is a 7 inch, motorized screen. An iPhone 4 was used to compare the navigation screen thickness. The unit tucks away neatly under the dash when not in use. This unit is also 4G LTE connected, and Google Earth has been fully integrated into the stock Audi software, allowing you to click a wheel, similar to BMWs iDrive. The top of the click wheel is also a touch pad, allowing you to draw a shape with your finger while you are driving, keeping your eyes on the road, while it selects the section of the alphabet you want to be in. “B” for example, brings up everything in the “B” category, whether you are in the navigation screen, or in the address book.

Audi has always made some amazing automobiles, and this one is no exception. The fit and finish of the interior is second to none. The cockpit ergonomics is completely amazing. The leather is comfortable and red stitching is used throughout.

Again, I’d like to thank Joshua Fruhlinger at Engadget for giving us the tour and Audi for showing me the new A3 cockpit simulator.

AT&T’s New Data Plans!!

by

att-logo

Yesterday during our Blackout to protest SOPA, AT&T announced new data plans for their smartphone and tablet customers that will launch this Sunday, January 22. These plans give us customers more data and value.

The new smartphone plans include:

-AT&T Data Plus 300MB: $20 for 300MB

-AT&T Data Pro 3GB: $30 for 3GB

-AT&T Data Pro 5GB: $50 for 5GB, with mobile hotspot / tethering

Those on smartphone plans needing additional data can pay $10 per additional GB on the AT&T Data Pro 3GB and Data Pro 5GB plans; AT&T Data Plus users will receive an extra 300MB for $20.
The new tablet plans include:

-AT&T DataConnect 3GB: $30 for 3GB

-AT&T DataConnect 5GB: $50 for 5GB

Existing smartphone and tablet customers will have the choice of keeping their current plans or choosing one of these new plans, and the current $14.99 for 250MB plan for tablet customers will remain available.

If you are unsure of which plan fits what you need, go to www.att.com/dataplans. This site has tools to help you figure out what you need, including a data calculator where you can estimate usage for your typical month of data usage. Once you are on a plan, AT&T will keep you informed of your usage levels by sending usage alerts as you consume the allotted data within your plan. Say for instance you have the AT&T DataPlus 300MB plan. You will receive a text message when you consume 65% of your data for that month, plus two additional alerts as you get closer to the 300MB provided within your plan.

I encourage you to keep your device’s Wi-Fi turned on because data usage over Wi-Fi does not count against your monthly data plan. Don’t forget that AT&T smartphone and tablet customers have access at no additional charge to AT&T’s 29,000 Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide – the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network. You can get more information at www.att.com/wifiaccess.

In review I feel these plans are tiered at much better levels and very fair. Though when you look at those customers getting throttled on their grandfathered unlimited plans at or around 2GB you wonder about their reasoning for offering a 3GB plan for the same $30. This goes back to my feeling that throttling after 3GB was a much better level to start with. Or if they would just say grandfathered unlimited plan customers will have to select from these new plans effective February 1 as all grandfathered unlimited data plans will be eliminated. That is really what they want and are pushing towards, so why get us upset every month by throttling us? Just piss us off once and do away with them. Oh well we can’t have everything though they may reexamine the throttling level after starting these new data packages!

ROM Review: The Collective Presents Absolution 3.5 “A Touch of Gray”

by

absolutionheader

Alright guys I have an inspire ROM review for you today as it is one of my favorite ROMs on any device for a number of reasons I will go into later in the review. As always the AT&T Wolfpack is not resposible if you royally mess up your device and all that jazz. This review will have a bit of extra meat to it  so strap yourselves in and let’s get started.

The History:

This ROM, well rather the team of Developers that make this ROM, have a history. It all started back in the Samsung Captivate XDA  forums around this time last year wit ha ROM called Phoenix and a dev named Adam Holden. His ROM quickly became a hit and well known as a great ROM with great support. After that, Team Phoenix was born and an assortment of different ROMs were released. Fast-forward a few months and a few ROMs later and Team Phoenix had turned into The Collective. This was simply a name change and all standards of Team Phoenix ROMs carries over. Now The Collective makes ROMs for a number of devices including the  Samsung Captivate,  HTC Inspire 4G, and Samsung Infuse. All of these ROMs have a huge following, and for good reason. And now onto the ROM!

General Overview:

This ROM is based on the latest CyanogenMod7 sources that are available at the time. So at the time of writing the Android version is 2.3.7. It also comes packed with a special kernel tweaked and modded just for this ROM. This ROM also has some very cool tweaks done to make it extremely customizable and overall a great ROM.

The Looks:

First thing you’ll notice about this guy once you set it up is that it does not look like the usual AOSP (Android Open Source Project- which means stock gingerbread with no manufacturer UI installed, such as sense) gingerbread experience. And if you thought that, then you’re right because it isn’t. Just about everything you can think of has been themed from head to toe with a kind of minimalistic black and white take on the usual blue Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) look. This was done by Collective member NunHugger who is a fantastic themer in this reviewer’s opinion. Not only does this ROM have an awesome theme, but comes with its own custom wallpapers too! With wallpapers ranging from Star Wars to zombies and from Bacon to flapjacks (a homage to one of the developers working on this ROM). Absolution has had a few different looks since its inception and each have been masterfully done.

Performance/Stability/Battery Life:

If you thought this ROM looked good, you’ll be blown away with how well it runs. This ROM has a history of being, and still is, extremely fast. Not exaggerating this thing is smoking. It can almost keep up with my Galaxy SII with its 1.2 GHz Exynos processor. In  fact this ROM is one of the only reasons I still use my Inspire on a regular basis. It’s that good. As fast as this ROM is, it’s stable too, no crashes, no nothing like that. Add to that some of the longest battery life of any inspire ROM I have ever used, we have ourselves a winner here.

What Separates This ROM From the Others:

This section is unique to this ROM because there are a bunch of extra tweaks you won’t find in regular CyanogenMod7. If you head on over to your settings menu you will see two extra sections that you may not have seen before. One labeled “Battery Bar” what this enables is a MIUI (Chinese based ROM you can go here for more information/research on the ROM) style battery bar that goes across the top of your screen and will deplete as your battery life decreases just like any other battery meter. The other section is called “Absolution Tools.” Select this and you’ll be greeted with the option to open up either the Absolution OTA app which has new releases, new kernels, keyboards, themes, etc. It’s one of the most unique parts of the ROM and adds a lot of value and customization to the ROM. You’ll also have the option to open up the Absolution Tools app which is chock full of awesome options to really make your phone your own. Just some of the things you can do with it are: install differentGPS scrpits, apply performance scripts (set your phone at a certain clock speed/governor to maximize battery life), apply sound mods, replace stock apps with replacements, and so much more. You really have to look for yourself at all of the options that are available.

The Verdict:

This is my favorite ROM for the Inspire 4G due to the massive amounts of customization, the speed and stability, the looks and due to the camaraderie of the developers and users alike. I highly recommend at the very least to try this ROM out. I can almost guarantee you’ll be blown away by it.

To download and try this bad boy out for yourself you can find the XDA Developers thread here

Here are some screenies for you guys:
